Night Moves
Night Moves
Kelly Reichardt, USA, 2013, 112′
Part of a retrospective produced by the Slovenian Cinematheque in cooperation with the Ljubljana Film Festival Liffe and Kino Otok and to be screened in the autumn, the film follows three environmentalists who take radical action and try to live with the consequences.
Harmon is an ex-Marine who still craves adventure and destruction. Dena is a high society dropout with a strong aversion to the dominant consumer culture she was born into. Josh is an introverted organic farm worker, but also a self-made eco-militant. Together, they take the most extreme political action imaginable, blowing up a controversial hydroelectric dam, the source and symbol of the resource-devouring industrial culture they so despise. But the real struggle only begins when the consequences of the act plunge them into a vortex of doubt and paranoia.
“I’m mad about all the crap in this country. The corporations won; I get it. They own everything and they’ve got the air, the ocean, the forest—they’ve got it all. Whatever. It feels so much like a lost battle that anybody who can still get up every day and fight for an environmental cause to me is quite heroic. I’m glad they’re there.” – Kelly Reichardt
Kelly Reichardt was born in Miami in 1964. She became interested in photography at an early age, borrowing a camera from her police officer father to take pictures of crime scenes. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Old Joy was the first American recipient of the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Her films are regularly in competition at major film festivals – Venice, Cannes, Berlin.
The Kelly Reichardt Retrospective was prepared by the Slovenian Cinematheque in collaboration with the Ljubljana International Film Festival Liffe and Kino Otok.
The screening will be followed by a discussion in collaboration with the Kinopolis film club. The film club meeting will be hosted by Ana Šturm, editor of Ekran magazine, and Tinkara Uršič Fratina, editor of the film section at Koridor.
