Being true to oneself often means being different from the average. On the one hand, this can bring non-acceptance, conflicts, and pain and, on the other, independence, originality, and freedom. Standing out and taking a step in your own direction can be scary, but, in the end, it brings relief and the feeling that you have put on your true face. Saturday’s programme features films that portray precisely such unique individuals: in the animated film The Girl Who Wasn’t Afraid of Bears, the protagonist, dressed as a man, defies the patriarchal system. In Everything I’ve Ever Wanted to Hear, the student Lija searches for her true self, confronts her desires, and moves between reality and fantasy. In the documentary One Meter Is Six Centimeters, we meet Ceno, who, despite his asthma, has not renounced his dream of ski flying in Planica, except that he lives it in his own way. Arachnophobia is an animated film about overcoming fear and the relief that comes with it, while Dog and Wolf depicts an individual who has lost his way and is searching for himself again in the world of nightlife. In the animated musical Stone of Destiny, an anthropomorphic stone seeks freedom and its place in the world, while HYENA shows how far an individual is willing to go to carve out a place for themselves – even through violence.
