Dreaming Dogs
Dreaming Dogs
Elsa Kremser, Levin Peter, Austria, Germany, 2024, 77′
A pack of strays – a woman and dogs – live in the shadows of Moscow, wandering restlessly through the harsh landscape of the city’s bowels, living their existence on the verge of disappearance.

A pack of strays – seven dogs and one woman, live in the shadows of the city of Moscow. Hidden from the totalitarian authorities, two species share their existence on the verge of disappearance. They are straying in constant restlessness through a savage landscape where the city is cracking. Shot from the animal’s point of view, patterns of mutual dependence and taming begin to blur.
“In Space Dogs, we confronted the untamed life of dogs on the street with the human abuse of them for space exploration. Dreaming Dogs is all about the interdependence of these two species. What does it mean when dogs and humans become so close that life without each other seems impossible? /…/ But how does Dingo live in the embrace of Nadja‘s longings and projections when she calls him a “scuffling, unscrupulous bastard” on one occasion and the “best dog in the world” on another, when she swears at him on the one hand and desperately clings to him on the other? This question thus reflects the paradoxical position in which dogs have always found themselves: a life in limbo between their wild origins and their dependence on humans.” Elsa Kremser, Levin Peter
