Pain can come from within or outside of the person. It comes in the form of illness, but also violence, fear, and systemic discrimination. Let the protagonists tell you, honestly or ironically, what torments them. In Do You Know Where the Birds Live?, the artist’s story is expressed through a combination of experimental animation and an honest, personal documentary approach. In Mentor, where pain is caused by sexual violence and abuse of power in a study environment, the subject matter boldly touches on its own surroundings, uncompromisingly exposing the passivity of supporting characters. Violence becomes systemic in Getty Abortions, a film that examines the representation of pregnant women and abortion in a digital library of stock photographs. This is followed by World at Stake, which is pervaded by feelings of political powerlessness in the midst of a digital apocalypse and entrapment in a game system with no way out. Hell Thunders uses a satirical tone to present the artist’s struggle with their own fears and the traumas that the demands of capital force them to confront. The pedestrians in the animated film No Room are literally pushed to the edge of the pavement. Through a personal testimony of a pedestrian we follow their frustrations and the consequences of poor urbanisation, car-centric planning, and the arrogance of drivers. The programme concludes with the neo-noir mockumentary Vel Vet Vel__Festival Film, which jokingly detaches itself from the reality of festival documentation and consciously embarks on a thorny journey towards a longing, romantic, and unattainable love.
