In 2022, Kino Otok was the first Slovenian film festival to move towards zero waste. While this doesn’t mean that the festival produces no waste at all, we aim to reduce its amount as much as possible and do our best sorting it. To deliver on our environmental ambition, we have teamed up with Ecologists Without Borders<\/a>, a national zero-waste organisation that helps local communities, event organisers and tourism service providers take steps towards waste prevention.<\/p>\n

Adopting a zero-waste commitment was the starting point for our efforts to reduce the adverse environmental impacts of our operations through sustainable energy use, procurement of products and services, waste management, and mobility. Our green practices also include raising audience awareness, measuring and monitoring the festival\u2019s environmental impact, and capacity building.<\/p>\n

Last year, we added sustainability to the key pillars of our operations, taking into account four fundamental aspects of this postulate: cultural, social, environmental, and economic. We now continue the process by devising a plan for content and organisational development that is balanced, viable, sustainable, and culturally, socially and environmentally responsible.<\/p>\n

Between October 1, 2024, and August 31, 2026<\/strong>, we are also carrying out zero-waste initiatives as part of the project Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema International Film Festival towards zero waste<\/strong>, which is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia following a successful application to the Public Call for Proposals for the Green Transition in Culture (JR-ZPK-2024-2026).<\/p>\n

The main activities of the project are<\/strong>: following zero-waste guidelines in the film festival production in 2025 and 2026; measuring the festival\u2019s carbon footprint in 2024, 2025, and 2026; the PRO Otok program for professionals: a focus on the green transition in 2025 and 2026; activities to raise awareness among the target group and the general public; and interim and final evaluations of the activities.<\/p>\n

The main planned outcomes of the project are<\/strong>: the\u00a0 production of two editions of the Kino Otok International Film Festival following zero-waste guidelines, achieving a 2- or 3-star zero-waste rating in 2025 and 2026; conducting three carbon footprint assessments of the Kino Otok Festival for three consecutive editions of the festival in 2024, 2025, and 2026; conducting two program activities as part of the Kino Otok Festival\u2019s PRO Otok program for professionals, with a focus on the green transition, in 2025 and 2026; implementation of the project\u2019s communication plan; and implementation of the project\u2019s interim and final evaluation activities, including a written report and proposed measures.<\/p>\n

The Otok Institute has joined the Green Skills Accelerator for CCS<\/strong> project in the areas of sustainable development, environmental justice, and human rights. The project is taking place from November 1, 2024, to August 31, 2026<\/strong>, under the leadership of Motovila<\/strong> in partnership with Umanotera, <\/strong>and\u00a0is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture through the Climate Change Fund.<\/p>\n

The aim of the project is to raise awareness within CCS and among the wider professional community about the challenges and opportunities of the green transition in culture.<\/strong> Additionally, the project involves developing tools for planning environmentally sustainable practices, including a carbon footprint calculator tailored to the cultural sector. It also includes designing a sustainability strategy and action plan for CCS organizations, with concrete measures to reduce CO2<\/sub> emissions.<\/p>\n
