Young4Film Network Marks Three Years of Empowering Young Film Programmers Across Europe<\/h3>\n

The European Film Festival Network\u00a0Young Programmers for Young Audiences!\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Young4Film<\/em>\u00a0for short successfully concluded its third year of activities in December 2025 with the support of the Creative Europe MEDIA programme. For the past three years, the network has been dedicated to its core mission: actively involving young programmers in shaping the programmes of six established international film festivals:\u00a0Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema<\/a>\u00a0International Film Festival,\u00a0Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival<\/a>,\u00a0Vilnius Short Film Festival<\/a>,\u00a0Piccolo Grande Cinema<\/a>,\u00a0Cinehill Film Festival<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Valladolid International Film Week \u2013 Seminci<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Discover the 2025 Film Catalogue of Young Programmers’ selections<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"In 2025, all participating festivals further developed their Young Programmers activities. Ten groups comprising a total of 98 Young Programmers<\/strong>\u00a0came into existence in the international framework of Young4Film project in 2025. During the preselection process, they viewed\u00a039 feature films<\/strong>\u00a0(33 European productions or co-productions) and\u00a048 short films<\/strong>\u00a0(43 European productions or co-productions). As a result of the process, they selected\u00a014 feature films<\/strong>\u00a0(13 European productions or co-productions) and\u00a029 short films<\/strong>\u00a0(28 European productions or co-productions), which were presented as part of Young4Film member festivals official programme in 2025, either of the core festival event or as part of festivals\u2019 year-long activities. For all selections and public screenings, Young Programmers prepared various communication materials and realized live on-site introductions, in some cases they also prepared and led Q&A with filmmakers after the screenings.\u00a0All selections are compiled in the Youn<\/strong>g Programmers\u2019 catalogue, which is available online\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0the link<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Major Milestone with the Launch of the First International Young Programmers Group<\/strong><\/p>\n

In May, the\u00a0first international group of Young Programmers<\/strong>\u00a0using the Moving Cinema methodology was formed. Each of the six film festivals in the Young4Film network invited two experienced Young Programmers to join the international group. The group of 12 met online throughout the summer 2025 to select a double-bill in which a film classic would be placed in dialogue with a contemporary film. Their selected program premiered in October at the\u00a0Seminci festival\u00a0<\/strong>and was presented live by the Young Programmers. The films chosen by the International Young Programmers were\u00a0Murina<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi\u0107 and\u00a0The Promise<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.<\/p>\n

Action Plan for including Sustainability and Social Awareness into the Moving Cinema Young Programmers methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the development of the\u00a0Sustainability and Social Awareness Charter for Young Film Audiences<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2023 and 2024, the network has been working intensively on the strategies related to sustainability and environmental awareness, as well as on gender balance, inclusion, diversity, and representativeness. As a next step, the partners identified the need to integrate these principles directly into the\u00a0Moving Cinema methodology<\/strong>, particularly in the work with Young Programmers. In 2025, the specialized subcontractor\u00a0Kijufi<\/strong>, in collaboration with subcontractors\u00a0A Bao A Qu<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Meno Avilys<\/strong>, has developed an\u00a0Action Plan for including Sustainability and Social Awareness into the Moving Cinema Young Programmers methodology<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The action plan will be tested and implemented across all partner festivals and the International Young Programmers group in 2026. “By explicitly integrating questions of sustainability and social justice, we create a richer and more nuanced starting point for discussing film. This expanded perspective allows young audiences to explore not only individual stories and relationships but also the wider contexts\u2014ecological, social, and ethical\u2014that shape lives both on and off the screen. In doing so, film education can inspire a deeper awareness of interconnectedness and responsibility, equipping the next generation to engage thoughtfully with the pressing issues of our time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Building on this groundwork, the next generation of\u00a0International Young Programmers\u00a0<\/strong>has already begun putting these ideas into action. A second group of International Young Programmers embarked on their journey earlier in March. The group of 12 experienced participants, mentored by\u00a0Mart\u00ed Madaula\u00a0<\/strong>(A Bao A Qu), is currently curating a programme focused on the theme of\u00a0sustainability.\u00a0<\/strong>Their final selection will be presented at the\u00a0Cinehill Film Festival in Croatia in July 2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An International Group of Young Programmers impressed audiences at the Seminci festival in Spain with their film selection<\/h3>\n

Behind the sunlit sea and rocky islands unfolds a tense story of family conflict, patriarchal control, and the yearning for freedom. Julija, trapped between her strict father and hesitant mother, discovers strength and possibility in the water. Murina is at once beautiful and unsettling. For young audiences, the film carries a powerful message: no one rescues Julija\u2014she must find courage herself. On Friday, 31 October, a special session took place as part of Seminci\u2019s Industry Programme. Europa Cinemas, the network of theatres specializing in European and auteur cinema that brings together 1,221 cinemas in 38 countries, brought together exhibitors from all over the continent to participate in the Innovation and Audience Development Laboratory<\/strong>. With the slogan \u2018Reaching new audiences: rethinking and diversifying practices and resources\u2019, this event brought together European professionals with the aim of seeking common strategies for the future to improve and enrich the cinema experience through digital marketing, programming or innovative communication, among other proposals. We are proud to announce that the International Young Programmers also took part in this intriguing discussion at the Palacio de Villena, home of the National Sculpture Museum, on 31 October at 16:30 pm. An interactive session between exhibitors and young programmers offered a chance to exchange experiences and ideas on how to engage new generations with European cinema and imagine opportunities for future collaborations across Europe. From Vilnius to Valladolid: First International Group of Moving Cinema Young Programmers Curates Programme for SEMINCI<\/strong><\/h3>\n

European Film Festival Network Young Programmers for Young Audiences!<\/em> or Young4Film<\/em> for short, entered its third year of operation at the beginning of 2025 with the support of the Creative Europe MEDIA program. The five international film festivals that have been members of the network since its creation \u2013 Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema International Film Festival, Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival, Vilnius Short Film Festival, Piccolo Grande Cinema and Cinehill Film Festival \u2013 were joined at the beginning of the year by Valladolid International Film Week\u2013 Seminci, which will host a very special Young4Film event in October 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representatives of all members of the network, which includes film festivals as well as three cultural organizations working in the field of film education \u2013 A Bao A Qu<\/strong><\/a> (Barcelona, Spain), Meno Avilys<\/strong><\/a> (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Kijufi<\/strong><\/a>(Berlin, Germany) \u2013 met in Vilnius<\/strong> in March this year, where we were kindly hosted by two Lithuanian Young4Film partners. In May, the first international group<\/strong> of Young Programmers<\/strong>using the Moving Cinema methodology<\/strong> was formed. Each of the six film festivals in the Young4Film network invited two experienced Young Programmers to join the international group. The group of 12 met online throughout the summer to select a double-bill<\/strong> in which a film classic would be placed in dialogue with a contemporary film. The program will premiere in October at the Seminci festival and will be presented live by the Young Programmers, who will travel to the Spanish city of Valladolid, the venue of the Seminci<\/strong> festival, for this purpose. Mentor Mart\u00ed Madaula (A Bao A Qu), who together with Julija \u0160ilyt\u0117 (Meno Avilys) is guiding the young selectors through the experience of choosing this special program, said:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSince May, a diverse group of 12 young programmers\u2014from six different European countries\u2014has been meeting biweekly to watch and discuss 15 films selected from the 70 years of Seminci and 10 years of Moving<\/em>Cinema. It has been a pleasure to listen to their lively conversations, enriched by their varied backgrounds, sensibilities, and experiences. Each film sparked intense debates about the filmmakers\u2019 choices, as well as broader themes that resonated deeply with the group. By September, after viewing and debating all the films, the group will curate a double program featuring one Seminci film and one from the Young4Film \u2013 Moving Cinema network, to be presented at Seminci 2025.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The selection process is currently in its final stages, and we can’t wait to find out which films the International Young Programmers have chosen for their program. After its premiere at the Seminci festival, the program will travel around the network, as festivals will screen it as part of their year-round activities.<\/div>\n

\nYoung4Film Network Festivals in 2025<\/strong><\/strong>In 2025, two more editions of the Young4Film network festivals await us; the aforementioned Seminci<\/strong><\/a>will take place in Valladolid, Spain, between October 24 and November 1, followed a week later by the Piccolo Grande Cinema<\/strong><\/a> festival in Milan between November 8 and 16. The Young4Film network’s festival year opened in January with the Vilnius Short Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>. This was followed in May by the Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>. In June, the Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema<\/strong><\/a> festival celebrated its 21st edition in Izola. At the end of July, the Cinehill<\/strong><\/a> festival took place at a new location in Fu\u017eine in Gorski kotar. In the fall, Cinehill is preparing a special film program for young people titled Timpetill. The wonderful festival editions that have already taken place and those that are yet to come have all been enriched by the film selections of young programmers.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Young4Film Network in 2023 and 2024: Key Achievements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

European film festivals recognise the importance of cultivating loyal audiences, which is why we are increasingly developing programmes for young audiences. To reverse the established practice of programming for young audiences exclusively by adults, we have created a new network of European film festivals consisting of Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, Vilnius Short Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>, Piccolo Grande Cinema<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0Cinehill Film Festival<\/strong><\/a>.We have made it our mission to actively involve young programmers in the creation of all five established international film festivals and have named the network Young Programmers for Young Audiences!<\/em><\/strong> or Young4Film<\/strong> for short.<\/p>\n

Our aim is to develop our audiences and promote European films<\/strong> amongst the target groups of primary, secondary and university students. We entrust young programmers with the responsibility of becoming part of the festival teams<\/strong>, while their film programmes and promotional material are shared with young and adult audiences at all the festivals within the network. The selected films are accompanied by original digital educational materials<\/strong>, which are made available to other film curators, film educators and teachers, ensuring that their reach extends beyond the Young4Film<\/strong> network and wider partnership. In addition to the five European film festivals, three cultural organisations working in the field of film education are also involved in the network\u2019s activities: A Bao A Qu<\/a><\/strong> (Barcelona, Spain), Meno Avilys<\/a><\/strong> (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Kijufi<\/a> <\/strong>(Berlin, Germany).<\/p>\n

Our collaborative approach to engaging young programmers is based on the original Moving Cinema<\/a><\/strong> methodology, which has been developed since 2014 by the team of A Bao A Qu<\/strong> in collaboration with several international partners.<\/p>\n

Results and Impacts<\/strong><\/p>\n

The network\u2019s mission is to actively involve young programmers in the creation of five established international film festivals<\/strong>, utilizing the established Moving Cinema<\/strong> methodology, which has been developed since 2014 by the team of A Bao A Qu<\/strong> in collaboration with several international partners. The Young4Film <\/strong>network thus as an act of sustainability reinvented results of previous projects co-financed by several Creative Europe MEDIA actions.<\/p>\n

In 2023 and 2024, 19 groups<\/strong> of in total 227 Young Programmers<\/strong> came into existence in the international framework of Young4Film<\/strong> project. As part of their activities tailored to each festival context and following Moving Cinema Young Programmers methodology<\/strong>, Young Programmers watched 89 feature films<\/strong> (84 European productions or co-productions) and 112 short films<\/strong> (90 European productions or co-productions) during the preselection process. As a result of the process, they selected 33 feature films<\/strong> (30 European productions or co-productions) and 48 short films<\/strong> (42 European productions or co-productions), which were presented as part of Young4Film<\/strong> member festivals official program in 2023 and 2024, either of the core festival event or as part of festivals\u2019 year-long activities. Across the Young4Film <\/strong>partnership, a total number of 117 on-site public screenings<\/strong> of Young Programmers\u2019 selections were organized in 2023 and 2024 in Slovenia, Serbia, Lithuania, Italy, and Croatia. We are proud to announce that by the end of 2024, we have completed and published a pioneering Sustainability and Social Awareness Charter for Young Film Audiences<\/a><\/u>. Sustainability and Social Awareness Charter for Young Film Audiences<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the face of global challenges<\/strong>, characterised by climate change, social inequalities and cultural fragmentation, the five European film festivals in the Young4Film network recognise the urgent need to take on an active role<\/strong>. Our understanding of ecological and social awareness is based on our awareness of the challenges posed by our planet’s diminishing resources and the urgency of sustainable action. We also recognise the importance of inclusive and respectful coexistence and emphasise the role of cultural education and networks for future generations.<\/p>\n

This Sustainability and Social Awareness Charter is the first result of the 2022\u20132024 project period and formulates the fundamental principles, goals and commitments that serve as guidelines for targeting young festival visitors and for organising and implementing events for young audiences. The Charter is not a static document but rather a dynamic framework<\/strong> that is continuously being developed. In recent years, all network partners have already consistently pursued a wide range of endeavours towards sustainable thinking and action in the context of their film festival activities \u2013 in social, ecological and economic terms. Sharing these experiences, identifying further fields of action and finding solutions for individual or joint problems were the aims of the regular dialogue within the network.<\/p>\n

The Charter recognises the sometimes very different conditions and frameworks under which the participating film festivals operate. The 69th<\/sup>\u00a0edition of SEMINCI, held from 18 till 26 October 2024, attracted almost 100 000 cinema-goers.\u00a0We are thrilled that\u00a0<\/strong>the festival will join our network with its milestone 70th<\/sup>\u00a0edition!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Learn more about Seminci.<\/a><\/p>\n

Seminci<\/strong>\u00a0will join an already established network, consisting of five other film festivals:\u00a0Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema International Film Festival, the Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival, the Vilnius Short Film Festival, Piccolo Grande Cinema\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<\/strong>the Cinehill Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(previously Motovun Film Festival). In the first two years of our network, we have worked together to transform how young audiences engage with film programming, building on the\u00a0Moving Cinema<\/strong>\u00a0methodology, developed since 2014 by\u00a0<\/strong>A Bao A Qu<\/strong>\u00a0in collaboration with international partners. With this renewed support and a new partner on board, we are more motivated than ever to continue our mission and achieve even greater milestones.<\/p>\n

One of the most exciting developments in 2025 will be the creation of an\u00a0International Young Programmers group<\/strong>. Two Young Programmers from each country will participate in bi-weekly online meetings and attend the 70th edition of Seminci in 2025 to present their film selections. These selections will then travel across the countries within the network. This event will also mark the\u00a0tenth anniversary of Moving Cinema Young Programmers<\/strong>, making it a truly special occasion.<\/p>\n

While we await the start of our new groups of young selectors on their journey, we warmly invite you to explore the\u00a0online catalogue featuring the Young Programmers’ film selections from 2023<\/a>. The 2024 catalogue is still in the making. However, ten groups of Young Programmers selected over thirty films, both feature and short, that enriched the exciting programs of five established European film festivals.<\/p>\n

The young programmers\u2019 selections were also showcased on various VoD platforms.<\/strong>\u00a0Kino Otok \u2013 Isola Cinema IFF <\/strong>and Beldocs<\/strong> used the Beldocs+ VoD platform, while\u00a0Piccolo Grande Cinema<\/strong>\u00a0utilized its own platform. Additionally, the\u00a0Vilnius Short Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0forged an innovative partnership with Lithuania’s national broadcaster and its VoD service, LRT Epika.\u00a0Films screened on the VoD platforms included:<\/strong><\/p>\n
