Kino Otok – Isola Cinema invites to programme presentations + two open calls

On 22 and 23 May 2024, Kinodvor in Ljubljana and Art Cinema Odeon in Izola will host press conferences and public presentations of the film programme, guests, professional opportunities and social events that will take place in Izola between 5 and 9 June and beyond. Two calls are open for contributions to the Kino Otok film festival: young people are invited to join us as film selectors; and adult professionals involved in film and cultural education for young people are invited to apply for the workshop “Green Transition in Culture”.

Press conferences and public presentations in Ljubljana and Izola

On Wednesday, 22 May, at 13:00, we invite you to Kinodvor in Ljubljana, where the festival team will present the main highlights of this year’s film programme, festival collaborations and other activities that enrich the festival experience. The presentation will be followed by a social gathering in the Kinodvor Gallery for the opening of an exhibition of visual memories of twenty years of unforgettable expeditions to the most cinematic Island of our sea, entitled See You on the Island!.

On Thursday, 23 May, at 11:00, we will meet for a press conference and public presentation at the Art Cinema Odeon in Izola, where we will focus on the film and accompanying festival events, which will take place at unique venues in Izola.

Open call for young selectors at Kino Otok in Izola

For the second year in a row, we invite students from Istria and beyond to join us as young film selectors during the Kino Otok – Isola Cinema Film Festival. Together they will watch films, discuss them with their mentors and guest directors, and select one for a summer screening as part of the Cinema Istria programme. They will join a network of several groups of young people – primary school students from Koper and Prado, secondary school students from Ljubljana in cooperation with the Slovenian Cinematheque and students from Italy at the Trieste Film Festival – who have already selected films for this year’s Kino Otok. The activities will be held in English. The call is open until Monday 27 May. More information and the application form are available here.

Green Transition in Culture: focus on young film audiences – Call for applications for the workshop

For the fourth year, Motovila/CED Slovenia and Kino Otok continue the debate on sustainable environmental practices in culture and film. The main guest of the event and the workshop tutor, which will take place on Thursday 6 June at the Manzioli Palace in Izola, will be Claudia Ziegenfuß from the Berlin-based NGO Kijufi (Germany), which coordinates the creation of a Sustainability and Social Awareness Charter for young film audiences as part of the Young4Film network of European film festivals.

The presentation and workshop will be held in English and is aimed at representatives of film festivals and cinemas, film educators, primary and secondary school teachers and other interested participants involved in film and cultural education or young audiences. Free admission, pre-registration required by 3 June via the online form.
