The numerous family of the bank clerk Subrat and his efficient wife Arati live in a cramped apartment in Calcutta. Due to their lack of money, Arati decides to make some on the side, which leads to complaints in her household and visibly transforms her into a modern woman. A subtle and optimistic masterpiece by one of the greatest names in the history of cinema.
